My insight about designer things...
Just this afternoon, my colleague asked me a quite interesting question. how do designers work? how do the generate ideas? their artwork is like an expression, how they think, how they see. how do they do it?
well, first of all, designers aren't magician or entertainer only. we can't make things outta nowhere to be there in a zap nor we only create fancy things. we do sometimes, when we know why we do it. or just sometimes, the situation asks to do so.
designers, mostly, have rationale behind everything they put in the artwork. they have ideas behind it, even the simplest artwork you may see. there's a thought behind that. note : there's a BIG difference between simplicity and laziness.
first of all, we do need all the facts before we start dreaming. we do need all the rules before we start breaking it one by one. that's when our common sense plays along. after that we can start dreaming, concepting, generating ideas, all those stuffs. it involves your senses, tastes, thoughts, and art. when you have to adjust without spoiling the ideas and make people understand. that's a rough-smooth adventure :D
there are differences also when you do something for clients and for yourself. for me, my most honest work is something i do for myself. because i know what i wanna see, how i wanna do, and why i wanna create that. but when you deal with people, you're dealing with their taste, expectation, and of course value. it can be different, but it doesn't have to change our basic ideas. it can change only the execution or treatment. in some other cases, it ruins everything. sad thing, but that's reality :D
then it's time you tell people about how you think. how you present your ideas and artwork and make people understand and accept it. how to make the ideas work in other people's mind. then you may see the result :)
it's quite a long process. not really easy at most of the times. but that's what we do. okay at least how i think designers should do. there must be a lot of other things, experiments, blahblahblah.
but as we're talking about designer's thinking, thinking out of the box is just too stereotype. for me it's not about thinking out of the box. it's just how far, how much miles you gotta go to get the right formula for your ideas to work. it's about to find the right point where you should execute your ideas and make it happens. it's to find the just right moment. then you can burst your ideas out.
some people may still think we just create fancy simple nice things. we are not, supposedly :)
